TAS2110: VBST cannot Boost to 11V.

Part Number: TAS2110
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TAS2563

Hi Team,

VBST cannot Boost to 11V,

Please help check circuit and PPC3 GUI setting and Register Hex file.

Vbatt level: During 4.3V

Booster voltage setting: 4.3V

load: 2ohm

target output level: 2W

Customer need TAS2100 GUI user guide, would you provide to me?

  • Hi Kevin,

Can you share some scope captures of the VBST/PVDD pin when trying to enable the boost?
Please notice the boost is only enabled when the input signal goes above a certain threshold where output requires a higher voltage rail to drive higher power. Is the output clipping when you increase the audio amplitude?

  • Hi~lvan,

We used one cell battery for 4.1V and capture of the VBST/PVDD as below picture.

When we input the audio source maxmum it still never to enable the boost and always keep the volage 4.16V.

And we listening to the sound that output have clipping.

We want to know how to set the PCC3 parameter setting is correct.

We wish boost the voltage to 11V and output power of 5W/4 ohm.

  • Hi Ivan,

No matter how the voltage level changes,
TAS2110 will not have star boost.

How many volts is the Boost start-up voltage of TAS2110?

  • Hi Kevin,

    Can you try the following:

    • Configure the boost to "Always On" mode
    • Make sure noise gate feature is not enabled
    • Use the scope to inspect PVDD/VBST voltage, set the trigger at some level higher than VBAT eg. 5.V, configure the scope to capture a single trigger sequence
    • Power up the device
    • Check if the scope captures a transient of PVDD/VBST rising higher than VBAT

This way we can at least know if the boost is being able to power up initially and it's later on being disabled.

  • Hi Ivan,

When set to Always ON mode, although there is a boost,
    But the output not stable, there will be no sound when the music is played, and the speaker output is like noise;
When setting is not Always ON mode, and the music can be played normally.

  • Hi Kevin,

Would you have more than one EVM to test? Does multiple devices show the same behavior?
I'm out of office this week, but I can double check the boost performance early next week and let you know if any hardware or configuration changes are required.

  • Hi Ivan,

Maybe schematics have something wrong, Due to TAS2110EVM boost function is OK, But EVT board also cannot boost, SW pin waveform is not stable.

In the TAS2110EVM User's Guide Figure 10. TAS2110 schematics device, not meet Table 3. Bill of Materials corresponding part value, would you help confirm this issue?

  • Hi Kevin,

The BOM may have been incorrectly copied from a similar EVM. I'll double check on the proper BOM and share it by tomorrow.
As for the boost operation, SW is the switching pin of the integrated boost, so it should not be a regulated DC signal. Could you clarify what you mean by TAS2110EVM boost function is OK, but EVT board cannot boost? Are these two different PCBs? Is EVT a custom board different than EVM?

Some important things to consider in the layout for proper boost operation are listed below:

    • DREG capacitor should be placed close to the IC
    • GREG capacitor should be connected to PVDD pin in a star connection, ie. directly to the pin instead of connected to a plane or polygon close to the decoupling capacitors
    • PVDD and VBST should be connected outside of the IC, not below it. Each of these pins should have its own decoupling capacitors.
    • TAS2563 QFN version is similar to TAS2110, you can refer to those same guidelines: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa988a/slaa988a.pdf

  • Hi Ivan,

For BOM parts have confirmed? Thanks!

  • Hi Kevin,

Sorry I lost track of that; I'll look for this data and share the information as soon as possible.
