TAS2X63EVM: TAS2X63EVM : Speaker Characterisation query

Part Number: TAS2X63EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PP-SALB2-EVM, TAS2563, TAS2562

Hi Team,

I have ordered only the TAS2X63EVM for testing purposes. I have a few queries regarding the same:

1. I want to test this board for mono tones and voice tones and ensure they have better SPL without damaging the speakers. Can I do  the speaker characterization with just this EVM or is it needed for me to puschase the Learning board as well? I believe TAS2X63EVM is a stand alone device. Kindly provide the necessary documents to proceed with the validation if so. If it can't be used alone for characterisation, kindly suggest how to proceed further. As a part of first level check I will be accessing only through USB and will not have I2C communication.

2. As per the link here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa952/slaa952.pdf, the characterisation guide uses two different boards namely. Is this the only way to use the smart amplifier for characterisation  of speaker?

3. Kindly provide the details of the speaker provided with the TAS2X63EVM (1W, 8 Ohm from PUI) and it's datasheet for further reference.

Thanks and Regards,

Rekha

  • Hi Rekha,

the Learning Board will be necessary to perform the speaker characterization. It is not supported with the amplifier only. https://www.ti.com/tool/PP-SALB2-EVM

Below is a ppc3 file for the characterized TAS2X63EVM speaker and a link to the speaker.

  • Hi Arthur,

    Thanks for the quick response.

I can see that PP-SALB2-EVM board supports: TAS2555YZEVMTAS2557EVM and TAS2559EVM and doesn't mention about TAS2X63EVM. Is it still valid for the TAS2X63EVM? Since TAS2562 amplifier is similar to TAS2563 I believe the same board is still suited for characterisation.

Kindly provide the ppc3 file for speaker : ASE02008MS-LW100-R.

Meanwhile will test the ppc3 file provided with the EVK.

    BR,

    Rekha

  • Hi Rekha,

Today is a TI US holiday. Arthur will get back to you on Tuesday.

    Thank you for your patience,
    Jeff McPherson

  • Hi Rekha,

the TAS2X63EVM will support the LB2. We plan to continue to support LB2 for future amps as well.

the provided ppc3 file is the characterization of the speaker provided with the TAS2X63EVM. I do not have the speaker ASE02008MS-LW100-R.

    Arthur

  • Hi Arthur,

We are presently testing on TAS2563QFN EVM.  We are using the speaker sent with the EVK for our testing presently.

    1. With Default characterisation values and modified values (ppc3 file was sent by TI) there is no difference in audibility. However, the parameters after importing the file show a change. Is there a way to know how much difference is the altered value creating from the default value?
    2. Clicking on the Audio Player launches the window to add tracks. However, I am unable to add mono channel audio files. Is this a restriction from the GUI side because the same wave can be played through Windows without any issue?

    BR,

    Rekha

  • Hi Rekha,

there is not a simple way to calculate the difference in loudness between the two speaker models. to determine the difference in performance you would need to measure speaker for its excursion and loudness, the differences in the performance will become the most obvious when the speaker is being pushed hard near its limits.

It may be the case that the PPC3 audio player cannot play mono audio files. However it is not necessary to play the audio through the PPC3 audio player to have the speaker protection and audio enhancements take effect. I will always play audio through windows media player or groove music.

    Regards,
    Arthur
