PCM3070 with Balanced I/P

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM3070

Dear All,

I have a very small query . Can PCM3070 be directly fitted with Balanced audio i/ps like XLR/TRS or I need to use a OPAMP as a balance to unbalance converter??

                My i/ps are line inputs.

Regards

  • Hi, Avijit,

The PCM3070's inputs are programmable to be either single-ended or differential (aka balanced).

My only warning to you are:

    1) make sure you clamp the input signal somehow to make sure it doesn't exceed the input range of the PCM3070, and

    2) add some external ESD protection to keep from blowing up the PCM3070 since it was not designed to be connected to the outside world without additional ESD protection.

For ESD protection I will use Bidder diodes but can you refer to any scheme for clamping i/p signal?? My application will run from CD player & PCM3070 can handle around 350mV . I don't think voltage-deviders is a good option as any one can increase input signal. Any suggestion???

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi, Avijit,

I couldn't find any good references around here. Basically, you need diodes to clamp the signal to keep it within the input range of the codec.
