TAS5720A-Q1: Need to reduce the Gain by software(I2C)

Part Number: TAS5720A-Q1

Audio Amplifier details is below which we are using in current model

VPN

MPN

P701127DFA0000

TAS5720ATDAPRQ1

This amplifier can support up to 25 W, but we were using 0.5 W rated power speaker. Speaker is failing when we are operating @ 2 KHz ( Measured Image is attached in output side )

Is there any possibilities to reduce the Gain by Software via I2C by changing the register settings.

SPK_GAIN0  (11) & SPK_GAIN1 (12) both are pulled up with 3.3 V. It is configured as Software control.

But Datasheet, Page No 30 ,  A_GAIN = 00 ( In description If 11: This setting is reserved and must not be used). So whether we can able to use or not.

We have seen  in datasheet Right & Left volume control, May I know what is the relationship between Gain & Volume. If we are going to reducing the volume of the speaker, we can safeguard speaker by using the same amplifier.

Please share comments at earliest. Thanks in advance.

Note : DVP is completed, we can’t able to change  PWB level

  • Hi Arun

But Datasheet, Page No 30 ,  A_GAIN = 00 ( In description If 11: This setting is reserved and must not be used). So whether we can able to use or not.

In software mode, please don't set this A-Gain value to bit 11, the other there option could be used. And by default is the smallest Gain setting. You may need to reduce the Volume.

May I know what is the relationship between Gain & Volume.

Gain is the analog part amplifier loop gain, only very limited option could be provided. Volume is the digital part settings, using digital circuit to increase or decrease the digital signal directly, it's more flexible. No problem to use.

  • Thanks for this information.

So you were recommending to go with volume control.

If i am doing change in control the registers of 0X04, 0X05, i can able to reduce the volume and achieve the lesser Power output. So that i can use lesser watt speaker & it would not be damaged.

Hope above said things are correct, if not please let me know.

Also please recommend if anything is required to set other registers.

  • Hi Arun

ope above said things are correct, if not please let me know.

It all seems fine. We could adjust the Volume to find out the suitable setting for your speaker.

Also please recommend if anything is required to set other registers.

The default settings works for normal using, and there's not so much choice in this device. Needn't specially changing anything else.

  • Thanks for your information.

In datasheet , 11 settings must not be used. But in current circuit we were  provided as 11 ( Pull-up with 3.3 through one resistor ).

So currently, which one was configured, 00 (default ) or 11 ?

Also may i know what is the recommendation which would be better one, please suggest.

If you are suggesting 00 option means i don't have a provision to connect ground.

If i am keeping as pin open means it will take as 00.

  • Hi Arun

In datasheet , 11 settings must not be used. But in current circuit we were  provided as 11 ( Pull-up with 3.3 through one resistor ).

It seems we have some misunderstanding here. The pull up, should be the device pin 11/12, the SPK_GAIN0/1, pull them both up means will use I2C to control the Gain, you are using correctly.

Then when using I2C, you need to config register 0x06 bit 3-2. This register setting is not related with your schematic, there's 3 option you could choose, and shouldn't write 11 into these two bits. For your current using, choose the smallest Gain would be fine, and default 00 is no problem. You needn't to change this register.

  • Well said understand.

So i will go with 00 (default). But i am using the speaker 0.5 W only, to achieve the less watt  output i can go with Volume control register (0 X04 & 0X05 )

This is way to achieve less power & safeguard  the speaker while using this amplifier.
Note 1 : Design is froze , we can't able to change

  • Hi Arun

I agree with you. Using smaller Volume would be fine.

  • Thanks for your confirmation.
We are working on that, once completed let me close, Wait for a while.
