LM48580: Using with magnetic speaker

Part Number: LM48580

Hi,

we have found an error in our schematic using the LM48580. In the datasheet, we didn't see that the device can only be used with ceramic speaker.

We took a magnetic one:

https://www.knowles.com/docs/default-source/model-downloads/rab-32257-000.pdf?Status=Master&sfvrsn=9a2d75b1_0

We see that the sound output with PWM works fine, and the tones are played how we want.

What can be the problems when we take the wrong speaker with this device?

Can there be problems with the stability of the device, or can we also use our speaker with your device?

Our problem is that changing the schematic and PCB is very difficult, because this PCB is now in production.

Regards

Eckart

  • Hi Eckart,

LM48580 should be OK driving a conventional speaker. It is usually recommended to place a series resistor to prevent short-like behavior or ceramic speakers at higher frequencies, in your case this series resistor would not be required.
