PCM9211EVM-U: Cannot communicate via CodecControl Software

Part Number: PCM9211EVM-U
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM9211

SBAC109 — PCM9211EVM Software does not communicate with the new PCM9211EVM-U as per image below:

The Device Manager recognises the eval board plugged in. The Codec Control Software sees the board in its list for new EVM simulation:

This has been tried on two machines with multiple cables and driver re-installs (including hidden devices).

I have tried it on the two exact same evaluation boards.

The board are brand new straight out of the box.

LEDs D1, D2 and D4 are on all the time indicating an error.

Pressing reset button you can see that the optical port resets so the rest of the board should hopefully reset as well but the software obviously doesn't recognise this event.

Note: Update Firmware option within the software is unavailable to me on both machines I tried.

  • Hello Zhamilya,

The GUI will show the part even without the EVM connected to it, so first you need to make sure you are really connected to it and device is seen by the GUI.

D1 is EVM application indicator, D2 EVM patch indicator, but the  D4 LED is PCM9211 ERROR indicator (please refer to the Users Guide )

When the DIR encounters an error (for example, when it loses a lock), an error signal can be configured and
sent to the ERROR pin (pin 1). Control of pin 1 (ERROR or Int0) is set by Register 20h.

The error sources can be selected using Register 25h. Each interrupt source can be masked by Register 2Ah (INT0) and Register 2Bh (INT1).
The interrupts  can be masked so you can narrow down the source of error. Please refer to page 24 of data sheet.

Please also check the clocks and make sure they are within the specs.

That should get you going in the right direction, but feel free to reach out if you still have the issue.

    Regards,

    Arash

  • hi Arash, What I don't understand is that why the software does not detect the brand new boards?

Have you got many customers that face the same issue? If so, what was their resolution.

No register changes have been performed. It should be plug and play really but the lack of instructions on this evaluation board is proving to take a lot of time to set up.

Could you please help clarify whether I GUI can detect the evaluation board when it is not connected to any audio sources?

  • Hello Zhamilya,

Can you try with a different GUI such as PPC3 ( you can download it from ti.com) and use its  I2C master and see if the board can connect using that GUI. Please let me know, as I might need to transfer this thread  to another team if it turns out to be a driver issue.

I put some screenshots for your reference for PPC3:
