PCM2901: Inquiry for input power with PCM2912A

Part Number: PCM2901
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2912A, PCM2912

Hi, TI support team

To configure a USB Audio converter, we are first considering the PCM2901.

Q1. Can't the PCM2901 receive USB power (Vbus) directly?

(The datasheet confirms that it is listed as max. 4V.)

Q1-1. If the product cannot receive USB power directly, can I use the PCM2912A to use the same function (USB Audio converter)?

Q2. Are the default settings of PCM2912A written in the delivered product? (when used as stand-alone)

Q2-1. How should I change the settings and write?

Q2-2. After writing the changed setting value, won’t the setting value change (when turning the power off and on, etc.)?

Thanks.

Regards,

MJ

  • Hi MJ,

No the PCM2901 cannot receive a 5V bus as the supply. 4V is the maximum as you listed. It's intended to receive a 3.3V supply.

The PCM2912A is designed to receive a 5V bus as the single supply.

I don't think I understand your second question. The device does not have an I2C bus like many of our parts. The part works fine as default, but settings described in the USB interface portion of the datasheet can be interacted with over USB.

If anything is changed, it will return to default when power is removed.

    Best regards,
    Jeff McPherson

  • Hi, Jeff

    Thank you for your reply.

When using the PCM2901, is it possible to operate normally if 3.3V is input by applying an LDO or Buck converter to the Vbus voltage?

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    MJ

  • Hi, Jeff

Regarding question 2, if the customer needs to change the default settings, is it possible to change the default settings of PCM2912A?

If changes are possible, please inquire about how to change them.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    MJ

  • Hi MJ,

A buck down to 3.3V works for the Vbus input. However I'm not sure exactly if the current load provided by USB is enough. The system designer would need to double check that.

For changing settings I'll loop in our software experts to comment.

    Best regards,

    Jeff McPherson

  • Hi MJ,

What setting you want to change in PCM2912, we have all of the software setting in USB descriptor, you can follow with the datasheet. volume control and mute control for input and output channel are already integrated into USB interface as below, customer don't need to modify in driver.

    Thanks
