PCM5102EVM-U: Hw connection to run DAC

Part Number: PCM5102EVM-U

Hello exprets,

I want to use 3-wire I2S with PCM5102EVM board.

I am giving power to board  through USB cable and 3 signals are connected at right side (analoge side). I want to validate my connection because IC is not giving any output.

Below is photo of connection

W3 connectors are removed for LRCK, DIN, BCLK, SCLK because I'm direct connecting it to right side of w3 connector.XSMT pin is high but DAC is not generating output.

I checked all pins of IC. Inputs are OK but it is not giving any output.

  • Hello Mohit,

Although the photo is not what you described, but to  connect external I2S and SCLK , you did the right thing of removing the W3 connectors for LRCK, DIN, BCLK, SCLK.

Below is the picture of two EVM and the right one is the one you want to set up your board like that.

I just tested a similar EVM with I2S signals and I attached its picture as well. Note that since I am using a specific set of cables, I connected Din, BCK, LRCLK and SCLK to the right side of the W3 array which is equivalent to removing the jumper and connect to the test point  as you plan. They are both the same.

If you have  verified  all signals (including supply) and part is not muted either , then the only thing that I can think of is the correctness of the data format.  Although you send the data in and receive it at the pin, it might not be the format that the DAC expects to receive. This is the FORMAT pin ( second jumper from bottom)

Could you please confirm. Table 6. shows the  PCM510x Audio Data Formats, Bit Depths and Clock Rates.

For I2S format please confirm that all 3 signals adhere to figure 15.

I think this should resolve your issue, if not let me know.

    Regards,

    Arash

  • Hello,

    Thank you for reply !!

Although you send the data in and receive it at the pin, it might not be the format that the DAC expects to receive

I didn't get where my input in not expected. can you suggest good input? I had gone through formats, clock rates.

I want to use 3-wire I2S. please share one of the frequency combination means what should be value of BCLK, LRCK?

also can you please share reference waveform image for input. (I don't want to use SCLK)

    Regards,

    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit,

I went to lab and tested The EVM on my bench first  with SCLK and then simply removed it from the EVM . The DAC was still functioning -without any need to do any modification. I used AP2700 to generate the 3 wire I2S with 1KHZ sinewave input with 48KHs LRCLK and 3.07MHz BCK

I took several pictures  and put them as zipped file here so you can set the EVM the way that I have set it , although some of the jumpers are not critical , but for your reference I tried to show all of the connections and scope shots. Hopefully this set of pictures  solve your problem .
