TPA3255: Limits on speaker coil parameters

Part Number: TPA3255

Hello,

Currently using a TPA3255 board to drive a 12 inch coil (80 turn 3mH .65 ohm DC resistance). What is the maximum coil inductance that the TPA3255 can drive?

If I use a larger coil, will it damage the TPA3255 or cause heating / reduced power?

I would like to match the datasheet speaker impedance of 2-4 ohms but am concerned about possible damage from higher inductance.

Any guidance would be helpful as the TPA3255 has performed well for us.

Thank you

Chris

  • Hello Chris,

We don't have any spec on maximum coil inductance as inductive coils aren't a typical application we design th devices for so would recommend testing this on an EVM. Please make note to be mindful of the Overcurrent limit of the device and check the device behavior on startup and shutdown to see if the expected behavior is okay for your system. With the larger coil, would depend on your core losses on how that would result in power losses and thermals effects.

    best regards,
    Luis
