TPA3255: Which is best BUT how to configure either one?

Part Number: TPA3255
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3221,

Hi,

I'm working on a project that requires 4CH of output, but I need the finished product to support one of three output configurations. This product will be packaged in a variety of kits and the amp needs to work in either a 4.0 (4CH mode), 2.0 (2CH mode) or 2.1 (2+1CH mode).

1. Will either the TPA3255 or TPA3221 facilitate this?

2. Do either IC require specific input configurations to operate between any of the output configurations?

3. Is the output configuration a simple wiring change like most half-bridge topologies where one channel is inverted or is running 4CH vs 2CH modes dependent on the PIN usage from the IC? It seems that running 4.0 vs 2.0 would require using different pins which would require using relays and properly filtered for each configuration?

4. If #3 is somewhat accurate to my understanding, would it be easier to implement two amp ICs instead of only one IC, but still, is running one IC in PBTL for one channel of output a simple "exterior wiring configuration" to achieve?

  • Hello Juan,

Do you need an analog input device? You could look into the TAS6584 as a digital input device option is a 4 channel device and change the configuration based on I2C registers?

    best regards,
    Luis

  • Luis,

Thanks for the feedback. In my application, I'm using an external PSU and there is a DSP on board so we can manage signal accordingly. It's automotive grade though and offers a lot of perks I can't take advantage of so it might not be cost effective for this project but will certainly explore it implementation and cost.

It's a nice device to have learned about though. I think it can work for other projects we have going.

  • Hello Juan,

In regards to your request the TPA3255 can support those configurations as outlined by Table 1 in the Datasheet for the Mode selection but please note the difference in output and pin configuration for each configuration which can be outlined in the Typical Applications diagram in the TPA3255 datasheet.

    best regards,
    Luis
