TPA2016D2: Question about the Gain Limiter Level

Dear TI Engineer,

We have some question about the Gain Limiter Level in the TPA2016D2 debug tools. We want to know what is the principle of this limiter in PA? Is it dynamic gain control (dynamic reduction of gain for large signals and normal amplification for small signals), or is it simply cut off when it exceeds this threshold. During our debugging , we found that noise may occur when the input signal is too large.

    Does the noise occur only when using the limiter? Or the noise is the reason why you need to enable the limiter?
    You should make sure that the limiter is set so that the maximum level is lower than the supply voltage to avoid clipping, and also lower than the power rating of the speaker so that it's not physically clipping due to overexcursion.

    We plan to use a limiter to limit the power within a certain range, but found noise during the testing. When we tried to lower the limiter further, and found that the noise was more pronounced. So we would like to ask what is the principle of the limiter?

  • Hi Lumina,

    Understood, I would start by testing with no compression (1:1) and 0dB gain, then apply the limiter and then the gain. Add the compression at the very end to make sure that is not affecting the rest of your testing.
