Headset mode, S/PDIF into slave, possible?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC8531

System is two PurePath Wireless Audio EB 1.2 boards with CC85xx-CC2590EM R1.0 daughter boards. Software version is 1.2.1.

Is it possible to input S/PDIF into the slave using the PurePath Wireless Configurator? I have tried every permutation of the available programming settings, none will allow the clock source to be external. If internal is selected then the BCLK output of the S/PDIF receiver is in contention with the internal clock and that doesn't work.

  • There is a problem with how the evaluation board handles the I2S bus. The I2S data that passes to and from the CC8531 share the same WCLK, MCLK and BCLK clocks. The two buses must be independent. There is no guarantee that the input I2S bus from the S/PDIF port would be aligned with the CC8531’s internal clock. The only way to make it aligned is to select external clock which is not possible in the slave in using the current PurePath Wireless Configurator software . If it could be done then the slave would be aligned to the device sending data into the slave but now does a problem pop up on the S/PDIF data leaving the slave or does the slave loses synchronization with the master?

  • After spending another day and a half on this problem I'm am confident the solution lies with the CC8531 having two independent I2S buses. Is there any way the chip can do this? It has extra GPIOs. If the I2S bus is done in firmware then it should be doable. Let me know.

  • Hi Steve !

It is not possible today to have external clock input on a slave, this is becase the network master is also clock master.

The GPIO pins can not be used for a second independent I2S bus, this is because the current I2S pins are connected to a dedicated HW module inside the CC85xx.

Are you using SPDIF on both sides of the link ? If not you could reverse the slave and master roles to get external clocking.

    Best regards
