TPA3116D2: TPA3116D2 mono PBTL configuration, output power and supply current request

Part Number: TPA3116D2

Tool/software:

Hello,

I'm building an amplifier based on TPA3116D2 in PBTL mono configuration.

I would like to drive a 6ohm sub-woofer, rated 120W.

I'm going to use a 24V supply.

From figure 22 and 26 of datasheet I can only find Maximum Power Output in PBTL conf for Rl of 2ohm and 3ohm. My Rl is 6ohm. For sure I'm missing something. So what will be the Maximum Output Power for 6ohm?

Also, I would like to know this to make an estimation of the supply current I should use.

Let's suppose a 50W max out, and 85% efficency. My estimation formula is 50/0.85/24 = 2.5A almost. Right?

Thanks!

  • Hi Davide,

I would expect your max power at 1% THD to be around 44W and 10% THD to be about 52W.

With a 6 Ohm load, your limiting factor will be your voltage headroom. Output power for a sine wave calculated using rms levels and is P=I^2 * R = V^2 /R. With a 24V supply and assuming no losses (sine wave can get to 24V peak), the output power would be P = (24/1.414)^2 /6 =46W.

Your calculation for your supply current is correct, but make sure to add some additional headroom to account for additional losses (any snubber circuits, passives, ect.).

    Regards,

    Ramsey
