Mic & Line output: difference?

Hi,

I would like to ask a question on TLV320AIC23B, document SLWS106H.

I see for both input and output pins there are two modes: (1)Line (2) Mic (headphone). For output, the nominal output level for both modes are 1.0 VRMS, however:

1.    For line out, it is just plain 1.0 VRMS.

2.    For Mic(headphone), it is marked as 0-dB output level, and there are gain between -73dB to 6dB for adjustment

Mic output seems to have the added capability of output level adjustment. Is this the only difference? Why for line output there is no such adjustment? Is it because:

I am not quite sure on it. Could anyone explain on the differences?

  • You are right. There are different output levels. But there are different output impedances too. The headphone output has to drive a low impedance headphone speaker, the line output just a high impedance analog input. So you can use the headphone output as line output, but the line output feeding headphones will not sound well.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level

    Edwin,

The wikipedia link contained enough information for the question and I am still studying it. Thanks for the answer.
