PCM9211: Right IC for i2s and i2c rpi5

Part Number: PCM9211
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAC5212, TAC5211, TAC5112, , DIX9211, DIX4192

Tool/software:

We are trying to add an Audio Codec to a raspberry pi 5 that has only i2c and i2s and maybe PCM for linux audio output and simple mic input.

There are too many choices for someone not familiar to choose the right codec.

The audio requirements are basic IoT and not high end. Mostly for alerts and prompts.

What IC will do the job and if you have any reference design schematics, it would be great.

  • Hello Jacques,

If you are looking for audio CODEC ( ADC + DAC) we have many different CODECs.  Our newest and most advanced CODECs are TAC5212, TAC5112, TAC5211 and TAC51111. Our older CODECs can be selected from TLV320AIC 3xxx line ( which I need to refer you to one of our CODEC's experts  for more specific suggestions -if you want a CODEC.)  Majority of our CODECs, including the ones I mentioned above,  are software controlled (I2C)

However, PCM9211 that you mentioned ,  is an Audio Interface Transceiver (DIX) which has an additional Stereo ADC in it ( so  in fact it is  a DIX+ADC) . It can take PCM data (I2S, RJ or LJ) and has the additional ADC for analog input .  PCM9211 is our most popular transceiver , and in fact  the only one with ADC in it. If you want a transceiver without ADC there are only DIX9211 and DIX4192. They both are I2C compatible.

For reference design, you can go to the product page , for example      https://www.ti.com/product/TLV320AIC3109-Q1   for TLV320AIC3109 CODEC and scroll to the bottom of the page, if there exists a reference design for it, you would see it there.

If you need information regarding our CODECs, please start a new post with CODEC or its part number in the title.

    Kind regards,

    arash
