PCM5102A: PCM5102A for an Audio application to play small .wav file.

Part Number: PCM5102A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV601, TLV320DAC3100, TAD5242, PCM5102

Hi,

I have this requirement where I need to store .WAV file in our system and my system shall be capable to play the stored .wav file using a headphone which has an impedance of 600Ω. Need help in selecting a suitable Audio DAC and Amplifier. Detailed explanation is as below.

We have a small duration .wav file, we are planning to use a SPI Flash to store this .wav file. But .wav file may need to be converted into a format such as PCM? To store it in external Flash, can this be done?.

If we are able store the audio .wav file in required format in SPI flash, my FPGA shall be will read and route it to Audio DAC using I2S protocol, DAC will decode the digital format of the audio data to a analog signal.

Since we need to drive the headphone with an impedance of 600Ω,we may need amplifier to achieve this? Hence would Line driver DRV601 be a good suite for this kind of application?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Adarsh,

I support Audio DACs and will be glad to give you some recommendation for parts. We have many  options for I2S input DACs but I want to point out  few DACs such as members of TLV320DAC3xxx family or our new  top of the line devices namely TAD5xxxx family with different load drive capabilities.

For example TLV320DAC3100  is a Low-Power Stereo Audio DAC With Audio Processing and Mono Class-D Speaker with  Headphone/Lineout output ( Software control).

Another example is  TAD5242 which  is a  stereo audio DAC that can be configured for either line output or headphone load (HW control) .

You can also use PCM5102 although  I am not much familiar with DRV601 but from it specs it sounds ok to me.

You can also go to ti.com and under Products tap,  select Audio and then select Audio DACs and you can refine you search and see the list of available options.

    Kind Regards,

    Arash

  • Hi Arash,

Though PCM5102 has a integrated line driver but can supports load down to 1kΩ only, since we are looking for a Line driver which drives 600Ω we selected DRV601 hope this combination works fine (PCM5102->DRV601). If any precautions I need to take please let me know.

  • The other 2 parts I mentioned can support 600 Ohm load / headphones  ,  PCM5102 has 1K min load requirement. So to choose a buffer for PCM5102,  the input impedance of the buffer has to be within this range and the output impedance should go as low as 600 Ohm to support your headphone , so I don't see any issue with using this DRV .

I would also use a LPF at the output of the DAC.

For specific questions regarding DRV device , please create a new threat with that part in the title so it goes to the appropriate team.

    Regards,
