PCMD3180-Q1: The signals direction of I2S

Part Number: PCMD3180-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello Sir,

I use the chip with 8-channel DMIC and connect to NXP's i.MX8M by I2S interface.

I would like to know the signals direction of the FSYNC and BCLK of the PCMD3180.

Is it a must to have MCLK? What is the signal direction if it is needed?

  • Hi,

The PCMD3180 supports both master and slave I2S modes (also called controller and target mode). This means that the BCLK and FSYNC may be input OR output depending on what is desired. If you want to use the device in master mode, it does need an MCLK in to the device in order to generate the BCLK and FSYNC out. If you want to use the device in slave mode, no MCLK is required, just apply BCLK and FSYNC to the device for operation. You can configure the device to be in master or slave mode with register MST_CFG0, page 0 register 0x13, which you can find in the datasheet.

Let me know if you need help choosing which mode to use, or if you have specific frequencies needed that may not work with the auto clock detection in slave mode. I will need to know more info about what clocks you want to use.

    Best,
    Mir
