TPA3116D2: Maximum output power in mono PBTL configuration at 4 Ω

Part Number: TPA3116D2

Tool/software:

Hello,

I would like to know what is the maximum output power of the TPA3116D2 IC in mono PBTL configuration at 4 Ω?

In the datasheet this part is a bit confusing for me. At the beginning (3 Description part) it says: ‘The TPA31xxD2 series are stereo efficient, digital amplifier power stage for driving speakers up to 100 W / 2 Ω in mono.’

I have seen a description on another distributor's site where it says (similar to the datasheet): 100W @ 21V, 2-Ω, 60 W @ 24V, 4-Ω, 30W @ 15V, 2 Ω.

Where I got confused is that the datasheet also says: 2 × 50 W Into a 4-Ω BTL Load at 21 V (TPA3116D2).  My understanding so far is that in mono mode, the output power is added together, so from that, the TPA3116D2 IC can do 100W @ 21V, 4-Ω.

So what I would like to ask is what is the maximum power output of the TPA3116D2 IC in mono PBTL configuration at 4-Ω and at what voltage (24V or 21V) ?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • hi Barnabas

pls refer below plot for 3ohm load at pbtl.

if you considering 10% thd, 24v 4om might be possible to get  close to 100w.

  • Hi Jesse Ji,

    Thanks for the answer.

I would also like help in clarifying the maximum output voltage of 4 ohms (1% thd).

If I understand the Figure 26 and the datasheet correctly, in mono mode the IC can output a little over 60W at 24V, 4 ohms (1% THD)?

On the other hand, Stereo (BTL mode) description is also confusing to me:

It says on the front (Features 1): 2 × 50 W Into a 4-Ω BTL Load at 21 V. However, I see in Figure 14 that it is close to 50W at 21V. Does this figure then show output per channel and not the maximum total output power (so it should be multiplied by two) ?

If I understand correctly and Figure 14 shows per channel (not total), is it possible that the IC can output a little over 1x60W in pbtl (mono) mode and max 60W (~2x30) in btl (stereo) mode at 4 ohms, 24V? (So the max output power is barely increased by almost zero in mono mode compared to stereo mode with a 4 ohm speaker?)

If figure 14 shows the maximum power, is the description at the beginning of the datasheet wrong? So the correct data is: 2x25W Into a 4-Ω BTL Load at 21 V?

Thanks in advance for the answer!

  • hi,

about fig-14, 21v 4ohm get close to 50w. this might be device variance, it should be able to get 2x50w for tpa3116D2.

but for pbtl, theoretically, it should get 1x100w base on fig 14. but usually, 2 times of the power is rarely be got for pbtl as it is hard to get theoretical value.

so we can refer fig16. it use 3ohm load, with 24v pvdd, pw at 1%thd is around 85w.

so basically, 4ohm load the pbtl output power should be above 80-85w with 24v pvdd.

  • Hi,

So, on the fig-14, does the figure show the maximum output power of one channel for tpa3116d2? (The description of the figure is not clear to me.

    Thanks in advance!

  • hi Barnabas

yes, it shows max output for 1 ch.
