TAS5805MEVM: Second output channel (U2 aka B) not working

Part Number: TAS5805MEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5805M, TAS5805,

Tool/software:

Hi, I have everything setup in PPC3 and have configured the board to be working in 2.1 mode. I cannot get the second channel to output any audio. Here's the testing I've tried so far:

Using a second TAS5805M board to verify nothing is fried.
Using different output modes to try to get the channel working.
Inspecting the second chip with a thermal camera verifying that it's not heating up or outputting anything.
Probing I2S signals to verify that it is being passed to the second chip.
Swapping to mono PBTL on channel A to verify the woofer is functional.

At this point I am at a complete loss. Everything points to this being a software issue with PPC3, but I have no idea what it could be. I have also tried multiple USB cables and verified that I2C data is being read by the board.

  • Hello,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Which channel are you having issues with output? One of the TAS5805 tweeter channels or the woofer?

Which device are you using for the woofer?

Did you connect SDOUT of TAS5805 to SDIN of the woofer device?

    Regards,
    Sydney Northcutt

  • Hi Sydney, I am having issues with the secondary TAS5805 (U2) on the TAS5805MEVM outputting at all as either the tweeter channels or the woofer. When I configure the primary TAS5805M in either mode it works fine. I just can't get it to output to at all. The evaluation board I am using board has two TAS5805s which you can configure in either mode. The SDOUT of the primary is connected to the SDIN directly on the board. I have probed the traces and verified that the I2S signal is reaching the second unit.

  • hi Anton

can you kindly check what kind of fault happen?

    tks

  • Hi Jesse, this sent me down the right path and I have figured it out. I had PVDD set to 24V which seems to cause an issue with the secondary TAS5805M (I believe due to the different decoupling caps used on U1 vs. U2?). When I set PVDD to 20V it worked fine. Interestingly, starting up at 20V and then bumping up the voltage to 24V does not cause any issues and U2 functions fine. This is very perplexing to me as the TAS5805M EVM explicitly lists PVDD as 4.5-26V. Is there something I'm missing here or is this a genuine issue with this board?
