Dears,

I am currently exploring audio codec options similar in functionality to PN: CS42888-DQZ. If you have any recommended alternatives or compatible components with similar specifications, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share the details for consideration in our ongoing project.

In case no direct alternative is available from TI, I would also like to inquire whether you have any end-to-end solutions suitable for car infotainment systems, specifically supporting the following output requirements:

  • 4 × 45W speaker outputs

  • 2 × 75W subwoofer outputs

The system will receive I2S audio signals from the SoC, which need to be processed through a compatible audio codec and then fed into a power amplifier meeting the above output specs.

If you have any evaluation kits (EVKs) or development platforms that align with this requirement, kindly let me know. Your suggestions and technical guidance would be highly appreciated.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you and best regards,
Santhosh

  • Hi Santhosh,

Looking at the Cirrus chip alone, my recommendation would be the PCM3168A-Q1: https://www.ti.com/product/PCM3168A-Q1

Regarding the full solution, I have some clarifying questions before we get to a solution.

Is there any requirement for recording or ADC path?

Will the SoC handle the crossover between speaker and subwoofer outputs i.e. will I2S channels already be separated between speaker and subwoofer?

    Thanks,
    Jeff McPherson

  • Dear Jeff,

    Below is my comments:

Is there any requirement for recording or ADC path?

Ans: Yes it's good to have recording.

Will the SoC handle the crossover between speaker and subwoofer outputs i.e. will I2S channels already be separated between speaker and subwoofer?

Ans: No SoC will not handle that, we have to handle cross over externally.

    Thanks,
    Santhosh

  • Hi Santhosh,

Neither the Cirrus device nor the PCM3168A has any kind of programmable filters to implement the crossover so I'm not sure how the crossover in intended to be handled "externally."

As an alternate, we can substitute digital amplifiers for the power amplifiers, removing the need for a codec. We can use something like TAA5212-Q1 for the recording and TAS6424-Q1x2 or some other digital input amplifier.

    Let me know your thoughts,
    Jeff McPherson
