TAS2118EVM: How to measure efficiency versus output power

Part Number: TAS2118EVM

Tool/software:

Hi TI,

I'd like to confirm how to test the TAS2118 EVM efficiency versus output power, to achieve the performance shown in the datasheet.

Currently, my tests aren't reaching over 80% efficiency at 2W as indicated in the datasheet. Could you please confirm if there are any issues with my setup? Thanks.

1. Is the playback audio source 1kHz?

2. Please help confirm if the following measurement method is correct.

Based on the calculation below, the efficiency is 50% ((2*0.5)/(5*0.4)).

3.The PPC3 version used is PPC3 alpha. Are there any settings in the software that need to be changed?

If you need more information, Please let me know.

Thanks.

Guande

  • Hi Guande,

One thing you may be missing is to disconnect the AP and any other equipment from the output of the amp, only leave the load connected, then measure the input power.

I'll prepare some instructions on the process we follow to capture such data and share with you by tomorrow.

  • Hi Ivan,

Great, I look forward to your reply.

You mentioned disconnecting the AP from the output. Is that to prevent other line impedances from affecting efficiency, right?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Guande,

You can refer to the attached brief document.

Efficiency curve testing for audio amplifiers-v3-20250603_123841.pdf

Correct, even though the impedance of additional measurement equipment may be considerably more than the test load itself, it's best to remove all other components at the output of the amplifier.

Another important thing to consider (mentioned in the attached document) is that power supply must be connected only to the amplifier, any other LDOs and additional components on EVM must be power separately. The banana-type connector provides the best connection point for external power supply.
