TPA3116D2: Piezo driver recommendation

Part Number: TPA3116D2

Tool/software:

Dear team,

Would you please recommend the best solution for piezo driver? I already know TI has "piezo driver" portfolio but also believe audio power amps like TPA3116D2 can be used to drive piezos.

Below is the requirements;
 - Analog in (1Vp-p)
 - Output voltage amplitude (>20Vp-p)
   -> Gain: > 20
 - Class-D amp
 - 40kHz sinewave output (or 20kHz if not possible)
 - Capacitance of piezo: 330nF/part.
 - Drive 6-8 pieces of piezo
   -> 2.64uF at maximum.

Best regards,
Yuto Kitamura

  • Hi Kitamura-san,

    Any of our class-d amps can be used to drive a piezo speaker. We recommend adding a LC filter and series resistor on the output to prevent any OC issues. Essentially as along as the amp can support a PVDD voltage of +20 V and the desired gain it should be okay for the application. The majority of our TPA3XXX family can support this. Though all of our amplifiers are only validated within the audio band (20Hz-20kHz).
