TLV320AIC3106: ALC245 Audio Codec Replacement Recommendation

Part Number: TLV320AIC3106
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3110

Tool/software:

Hii,

We are currently using the TLV320AIC3106IRGZT as a replacement for the ALC245 codec in our design.

Could you please suggest any suitable alternatives or equivalent audio codec ICs that meet or exceed the performance and feature set of the TLV320AIC3106IRGZT?

We would appreciate your technical recommendations.

  • Hi Vaibhav,

It depends on your specific requirements. We do not have any direct replacements with better performance. Many of our newer codecs (i.e. TAC5x12) are smaller and have better performance with the same number of ADC and DAC channels. However, the difference here is the AIC3106 supports 10 inputs and 7 outputs while the TAC5x12 only supports 2 inputs and 2 outputs, so it really depends on the number of inputs/outputs you need.

    Best,

    Garret

  • Hi Garret,

Thanks for the info on AIC3106. I’m now looking for a similar replacement part for the Realtek ALC245 (used in our devices). Could you help me with a part or family that:

    • Offers equal or better audio performance,
    • Has a comparable number of I/O channels (or at least sufficient for our use case).

    Best regards,
    Vaibhav

  • Hi Vaibhav,

Could you characterize key specs of the ALC245 here? And please kindly provide how many inputs and outputs are necessary for your use case. These will help me to provide the best recommendation.

    Garret

  • Hi Garret,

Please find attached the block diagram of the audio codec used in our current design.

In this design, two separate audio jacks were used — one for headphones and another for the microphone.

For our intended use case, we plan to simplify this by using a single combined headphone + microphone jack.

if there’s a better-suited codec for this application, we’d appreciate your recommendation.

    Best regards,

    Vaibhav

  • Hi Vaibhav,

Thank you for the block diagram. If these are your only I/O requirements, I would recommend the TLV320AIC3110, as it would appear you need a codec with a stereo Class-D amplifier/speaker driver. This device has fewer I/O and slightly lower SNR performance than the 3106, but has all the features you need: mono mic input, headset detection, headphone output, and stereo speaker amplifier.

Another option is TLV320AIC3111, which has the same pinout and specs as the 3110, but has added processing power with an on-chip miniDSP if that is desired.

    Best,

    Garret

  • Hi Garret,

    Thank you for your recommendation.

I have attached the block diagram for the TLV320AIC3110/3111 based on our I/O requirements. Please note that the MCLK is provided externally in our design. Could you please review the diagram and let me know if any changes or improvements are needed?

    Looking forward to your feedback.

    Best regards,
    Vaibhav

  • Hi Vaibhav,

    Looks good to me.

    Best,

    Garret
