Problem getting started with cc8531

Hi !

I purchased a headset Purepath wireless dev kit.

I remade my own board  following the schematic given by Ti.....but I have some troubles.

I can program the cc8531 with the CC Debugger ( I load the CC85XXDK heatset preloded demo ).

But when I want to power on pressing the button connected to CS_N, the LED doesn't flash as it does with the dev kit.

If I force the CS_N to low, I can wath my 48Mhz crystal with my scope.

If I load the master preloaded demo on the original Ti board and the slave one on my own, when I press the toggle switch to pairind modules, the Led on my board light on 1/2 second then light of. On the original Ti board, the LED stay on 1 second and fall in the blinking mode waiting for his slave friend.

It's like the CC8531 wanted to stay in standby or shut down. 

Do you know what I'm doing wrong ?

    In the attached files, you have all the PDF you need If I forgot nothing.

    I don't have CADSTAR as you can see so that's why I send you PDF files.

    As you can see, I just use a DsPIC33 MCU from Microchip but It's not soldered yet.

    I made just little changes next to the audio codec.

    Don't hsitate to ask if you have any questions. My english is not good and Im an electronic beginner.

  • Is everything else soldered on the board? Have you checked to power to the codec?

    What 48Mhz crystal are you using? Do you have the data sheet?

    I have checked all the power around the audio codec and the CC8531.

    I have exactly 3.30VDC given by the LM1117-3.3. The result is the same with the Li-po battery or with my 5VDC source.

    All is soldered on the board exept the MCU. 

    Is it a problem if I have no audio source connected to the audio codec ?

    I use this crystal : http://www.txccrystal.com/images/pdf/7a.pdf with 18pF load capacitance.

    Could you take a scope plot of what happends on the I2C lines at start-up?

  • That's what I have when I push the button on my custom board.

    I have much more data transmitted on the dev kit so I think the audio codec is the problem but where ? I have no excessive consumption.

    I already replace the codec audio two times but peraps it's more fragile than other components.( I use a hot air station ).

    What do you think ?

    I replace again the audio codec by a new one received by Farnell today but nothing better.

    I have a high level on the reset pin when I press the magic button so I think the CC8531 is running well ?!

    Do you know what I can miss around the AIC3204 ?

    What happens if you select DSP instead of aic3204 for your slave device? Are you able to pair with a TI master then?

    I think I have spotted the problem.

    On the CC85XX headset reference schematic, I read for R25 : default mount 2-3

    On the datasheet page 5, I read for LDO_SEL pin 30 : connect to DVss. But If i connect R25 to VDD, it works :)

    Im able to pair with the dev kit board !

    Now, my problem is to find how to select the IN2_L and IN2_R as a mic input.

  • Hi Mathieu,

    Thank you for spotting this. It's misleading and it will be removed. If you look close to the component R25 you can see that we specify "port_1-2", so connecting LDO_SEL to Vdd is correct if you want to use the I2C-sequences in the preloaded demo. Regarding you'r IN2_L/R issue I gave an answer here:

    Luckely I stumbled across this post in were the issue of Mathieu was written were he found the CC8531 did not start like in the headset_reference design. I have exactly the same issue this week...After careful study on the Headset reference and designed my own 4-layered board (CC8531+CC2590+TLV320AIC3204) it was able to flash the file but did not show the LED blinking sequence. Only when hold the CSN low by button, the crystal showed 48MHz. Also the short burst on the I2C was observed.
    In my case also the LDO_SEL was connected to DVSS as was supposed to be the default setting for R25 were 2 - 3 was indicated. Then I looked onto the headset reference board in my kit and indeed the LDO_SEL is connected to VDD (2.1V measured).
    When you write to correct the misleading default setting for R25, I could not resist checking this today. It was still not changed! In my opinion it is needed to update the documents immediately. The reason is I ordered 10 PCB's 4-layered and my LDO_SEL is underneath the CoDec, out of reach now. 10 protoboards costed me 143 euro for the bare boards only, let go of the components in addition to that...It can save others lots of money, especially if they are like me using electronics for hobby.

    Looking forward for any reaction, possible TI can help me on new parts to populate a new set of PCB's as a small compensation.
