Regarding the MD pin, it's understood that leaving it open-ended is acceptable, but could this introduce noise into the signal?
Is it internally isolated from the analog circuitry?

Apologies for the delay.
This is typically a concern with floating input pins. Especially if the noise can cause false 0-1 or 1-0 toggling internally. Hence it is better to keep the unused MD1 pin pulled down to GND.

In the meantime, I think it is best to follow his recommendation to GND the unused MD pin. It should be internally isolated from the analog circuitry, but is involved in the clocking circuitry so toggling from floating should be avoided.
