National's Design Course Info

 Hello!

On the National page there is some interesting training documents. At the URL:

http://www.national.com/AU/design/courses/148/wha02/02wha02.htm

In the section on common audio parameters, it states:

"A maximum of 0.5% is a common limit as the amount of distortion that cannot be readily percieved by the human ear. The amount of acceptable THD+N is also frequency dependent. Distortion in the bass frequencies is much harder to hear in listening tests where distortion in the midrange and treble frequencies is more readily observed."

There is no bibliography for this document. I am very curious to know the source of these "listening tests" - especially in regards to the frequency dependence of distortion perception. Are these results from in-house tests or are you referring to some publications. If this information is from some published work, could you please tell me your source.

thank you

  • Hello,

The information you are referring to was offered as a general guide line for audio specifications. It was not the result of extensive listening tests or documented research material.  Opinions vary when it comes to correlating "sound" to measured performance.

    Thanks,
