DIT4192: DIT4192 broken and getting very hot

Part Number: DIT4192

Laste year, we have introduced DIT4192 in one of our product as replacement for an end of life partnumebr from another supplier.

We are getting some claims about SPDIF is not working and the product is getting hot.

From our analysis we found that DIT4192 is broken, once changed the product restart to work properly, but we would like to understand what could be the root cause.

Beside a defective batch or production issues, could it possible that the power up sequence, shown in the attached iage could cause the mentioned problem?

Anything else?

  • Hello,

There is no required power sequencing for this device, just the normal resetting  as it is mentioned on page 6 of datasheet  (RESET AND POWER-DOWN OPERATION)

If the device is getting hot,  usually it is an indication of internal damage. You can check if there is excess current drawn by measuring various supply currents and compare them to the numbers shown in datasheet. Usually a hot chip accompanies with abnormal current being drawn from supplies. If the replacement gets damaged again, that usually points to a board issue such as bypass capacitor on the supply lines or even supplies itself.

By doing failure analysis in our labs usually we can tell the location of failure/damage  inside the IC ( if it is the IC itself). Since I am not aware of any similar incident for this device I suspect it is an isolated failure. Going above the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS will damage the device permanently.  Also this IC can be damaged by an ESD event.

  • Hello Arash,

I can confirm that our design respect all requirements shown in the datasheet but we have a significant percentage of returns back for this problem

How to start failure analysis in your labs? How many pieces you will need for it?

    Claudio

  • Hello Claudio , That is a different department to start the return with. I believe you  start with your regional sales rep or the distributer that you got the parts.

In most cases it will be handled by the regional team or local team. In some cases when the set up is not available in the reginal office , it might be shipped to another region. If you are in Europe, I believe it will be handled locally.

You need to fill up the  form they give you and then ship them the samples that are not working. Usually one of two samples should be enough to start the process.

    Kind Regards

  • Hello Arash,

I sent an email almost 2 weeks ago to your colleagues located on Italian office, but no answers at all. Could you give me a contact were to address our request of failure analysis? Thank you

  • Hello Claudio ,

Sorry to hear that. It is very strange that you have not got any respond.

My suggestion is to contact your distributor that you purchased them  form and go that route to return/FA analysis or start a new post on E2E and ask how to return or contact Italian office in TI  for return.  Do not mention any part number in your post since it is a general question. Just ask about contact team and return process in your region.

    Kind Regards,

    Arash
