TAS5827: Hardware control mode

Part Number: TAS5827

Dear Team,

My customer is considering to use the TAS5827RHBR in their system.
They would like to know about the hardware control mode.
If they want to input audio signals in TDM mode, can they use hardware control mode?
Or are there any restrictions in the hardware control mode, such as that it can only support I2S?

Best Regards,

Koshi Ninomiya

  • Hi Koshi-san,

Yes, they can physically input audio signals in TDM mode while the device is set to Hardware Control Mode. The serial audio interface pins (SDIN, SCLK, LRCLK/FS) are active regardless of the control mode.

  • Hi Peter-san,

    Thank you for your reply.
The customer has additional questions as follows,

It is said that TDM mode can also be supported, but does it mean that the DSP side automatically discriminates between normal I2S and TDM and performs voice processing?
When used in TDM mode, they thought it was necessary to inform the DSP of what format the sender was sending.
Also, how does the amplifier determine which channel the audio should be output in case of automatically discrimination?

  • Hi Koshi-san,

    Sorry for the confusion.

    1. No, the DSP does not automatically discriminate the audio data format. As the customer suspected, the DSP must be explicitly informed of the sender's format.

    • According to the datasheet, the audio data format (I2S, LJ, RJ, TDM) is selected via registers (e.g., SAP_CTRL1 Register, Offset 33h, bits D[5:4]).
    • The device automatically senses the sampling rate (LRCLK frequency) and clock ratios, but it cannot automatically detect whether the incoming data stream is I2S or TDM.
  • Hi Koshi-san,

    2. Since there is no "automatic format discrimination", the amplifier determines the output channel strictly based on register configurations:

    • Channel Mapping & Crossbar: The TAS5827 features a mixer and an output crossbar. The specific TDM slot (channel) assigned to the left and right audio outputs is configured via I2C registers (such as I2S_CTRL and SAP_CTRL registers).
    • Default Behavior: If no format or channel mapping is configured (e.g., in Hardware Control Mode), the device defaults to standard I2S format and 24-bit word length. It will simply process the first two slots of the data stream as Left and Right channels.
  • Hi Peter-san,

    The customer understands as below,
Since the register setting cannot be changed in hardware control mode, only the I2S signal, which is the initial setting, is supported.
