AM625-Q1: dummy codec

Part Number: AM625-Q1

Hello TI expert,

In the application note "Linux Audio on Sitara Socs", section 6 "Dummy Sound Card DTS Changes", it says a patch is needed in order to use a dummy codec.

In my application, I need to bind a mcap with dummy codec in a DAI, is the patch still needed? or there is an alternative?

  • Hi Shun Yao,

You need to bind a McASP (Multichannel Audio Serial Port) to a Dummy Codec in the following situations:

    Common Use Cases

    1. Audio Loopback Testing

    • When you want to test the McASP interface without a real audio codec connected
    • Useful for verifying data transmission/reception on the serial bus

    2. Custom/External Codec Without Linux Driver

    • When your actual codec doesn't have a Linux ALSA driver
    • The dummy codec acts as a placeholder so the McASP DAI can still be registered and used
    • Your codec configuration is handled externally (e.g., bare-metal, DSP side)

    3. Codec-less Audio Path

    • When McASP is connected to a non-standard device (e.g., another processor, FPGA, custom hardware)
    • The remote end handles its own audio format, so no codec driver is needed on Linux side

    4. Development/Bringup Phase

    • Early board bringup when codec driver isn't ready yet
    • Allows testing McASP clocking, framing, and data lines independently

Yes, you would need the patch in all the above scenarios in order to have DAI link to be registered and used.

    Hope this helps

    Best Regards

    Suren
