TAC5112: audio codec processing capability

Part Number: TAC5112

Hi Sir,

My customer is currently evaluating whether the TAC5112 meets their requirement for an audio codec with DSP functionality in their DSC products. Could you please help confirm if the following features are supported?

Application: DSC
Input: 2x PDM DMICs (Stereo) | SNR: 64 dBA | Sensitivity: -26 dBFS
Output: 1x Speaker (0.4W, 10Φ)
* Note: The audio output can also be processed by the SoC to support USB UAC (USB Audio Class) output.

1. Does the TAC5112 support 48 kHz / 24-bit audio data processing and output?

2. DMIC Audio Input Processing Capabilities

Input Adjustment (ADJ): Level optimization prior to audio processing.
The customer requires optimizing the input audio signal level before processing, with parameters adjustable during development.
Can this be achieved via internal digital gain or Gain Calibration?

Sound Quality Correction (EQ): Frequency response smoothing, low-pass filter.
Requires a parametric equalizer or IIR filter for frequency response adjustment, as well as a low-cut filter (LCF) with an adjustable cutoff frequency and filter order.
Can the built-in Biquad Filters adjust the cutoff frequency and meet the LCF requirements?

Noise Reduction (NR): Reducing wind noise, optical system operation noise, and intrinsic noise.
The following NR features are required:

Wind noise suppression: To reduce noise generated when wind blows against the camera body. It is recommended to implement this via DSP.
Optical system operation noise suppression: Such as mechanical noise from AF, Zoom, Iris, OIS, etc.
Intrinsic noise suppression: To suppress inherent background noise in the microphone input signal generated by internal circuitry (e.g., thermal noise, shot noise, and flicker noise from FETs and analog amplifiers). This function must remain always-on.

Level Adjustment (LEVEL):
Signal levels should be adjustable via Gain, and the volume control for the left and right channels must be stereo-linked.
Based on this level setting, the output signal level will increase or decrease accordingly for a given input level. When the input signal is high, the output level should be maintained at a constant value via AGC or a Limiter.
Can the built-in Digital Volume Control (DVC) fulfill this requirement?
If not directly supported, can we configure the attenuation amount per step via software and control the L/R channel synchronization?

Automatic Gain Control (AGC):
Can the AGC compress the dynamic range of the microphone input audio signal without causing unnatural auditory artifacts, while raising the average volume to improve audibility?
Its static characteristics must include Limiter, Compressor, and Expander (Noise Gate) functions, while dynamic characteristics require Attack and Release parameters.
Does the built-in AGC support the features above? Are these adjustable parameters and ranges handled internally, or must they be implemented by an external SoC?

Processing Order: ADJ → EQ → NR → LEVEL → AGC
Can the internal processing sequence of the TAC5112 be adjusted to match the order required above?

3. Output Audio Processing

LR MIX: Conversion to 1-Channel (Mono)
For media playback only. Converts stereo-recorded audio signals to mono.
Does it support L/R mixing to output a mono channel?

If this function is not available internally, can it be implemented through other internal blocks, or must it be processed by an external SoC?

EQ: Sound Quality Adjustment
A parametric equalizer or IIR filter should be implemented to adjust the frequency response of the output audio signal.
Ideally, adjustments should be configurable separately for media playback, camera operation sounds, and UI/operation sounds.
Is it possible to apply different EQ parameters for different audio sources and switch settings during playback?

LEVEL: Volume Adjustment
Media Playback: Adjustable signal level via Gain. (Step level settings TBD).
Camera Operation Sounds: Adjustable volume via settings (range and step values). Can be set to "Off".
UI/Operation Sounds: Adjustable volume via settings (range and step values). Can be set to "Off".
Can the volume be set independently for media playback, camera operation sounds, and UI/operation sounds?

If different audio sources share the same volume control block, can independent volume settings be achieved via software control or parameter switching?

AGC: Automatic Gain Control
Functionality is identical to the "AGC" in the input audio processing section.
Since this is a mono audio output processed via LR MIX, stereo synchronization is not required.
AGC configuration parameters (Thresholds for Limiter/Compressor/Expander, Ratio/Slope for Compressor/Expander, Attack/Release times, etc.) should be parameterizable for evaluation and tuning.

Can this AGC be applied to the output audio processing path? If the location or functionality of the built-in AGC does not meet the requirement, must it be implemented by an external SoC?

4. Is it possible to improve the DMIC SNR performance to >45 dBA?

5. When using stereo DMICs as the L/R audio inputs to create a stereo effect with the built-in audio codec, is there a recommended spacing between the left and right microphones?

  • Hello,

    1. Does the TAC5112 support 48 kHz / 24-bit audio data processing and output?

    Yes.

The customer requires optimizing the input audio signal level before processing, with parameters adjustable during development.
Can this be achieved via internal digital gain or Gain Calibration?

The digital volume can be changed dynamically while the converter is active.

Can the built-in Biquad Filters adjust the cutoff frequency and meet the LCF requirements?

The Biquads are very flexible and can set an adjustable cutoff. Please see the details here: https://www.ti.com/lit/ab/slaaeh6/slaaeh6.pdf

Can the built-in Digital Volume Control (DVC) fulfill this requirement?

Yes you can adjust the DVC dynamically during operation.

Does the built-in AGC support the features above? Are these adjustable parameters and ranges handled internally, or must they be implemented by an external SoC?

The AGC is supports internal parameters of programmable target level, max gain, attack/release, and noise threshold.

Can the internal processing sequence of the TAC5112 be adjusted to match the order required above?

No, the signal chain is fixed:

Does it support L/R mixing to output a mono channel?

    Yes. Mixer app note: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaaer9/slaaer9.pdf

Is it possible to apply different EQ parameters for different audio sources and switch settings during playback?

Yes, each channel can support up to 3 biquads. You can refer to the app note linked earlier.

If different audio sources share the same volume control block, can independent volume settings be achieved via software control or parameter switching?

Each output channel has its own DVC.

Can this AGC be applied to the output audio processing path? If the location or functionality of the built-in AGC does not meet the requirement, must it be implemented by an external SoC?

No, there is no AGC in the DAC signal chain.

    4. Is it possible to improve the DMIC SNR performance to >45 dBA?

SNR performance is limited to datasheet spec.

    5. When using stereo DMICs as the L/R audio inputs to create a stereo effect with the built-in audio codec, is there a recommended spacing between the left and right microphones?

    No.

    Best,

    Garret
