CC85XX range and dipole antenna

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2590, CC2500

Hi,

I'm designing a wireless audio link with CC85XX devices. Due to limited range requirement, same room maximum 10m distance, I was wondering if a solution without the CC2590 could be enough. However, it may be a crowded place with 8 or 10 persons in the middle. Would that work fine?

Also the target board have some more chips and we'd like to reduce a little the number of parts and save board space on one dimension. Looking at the reference designs:

- On CC85XXEM, the SMA connector is not required in this design, would it be possible to save some space
from balun till the antenna, http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru251a/swru251a.pdf @ page 21 figure 12.
What's the minimum track length from balun till antenna?

   - The folded dipole antenna design (http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra118/swra118.pdf) for CC2500 seems also a good option to save balun parts and space. Would that design work with CC85XX or the characteristics don't match?

Thank you,

Gilson

  • Hi Gilson,

Typically it work just fine without the CC2590 for inroom applications, but how many audio channels do you have? number of slaves?  what latency? and are you using SLAC? All these parameters will affect the robustness of your final solution... The best way is to by a CC85xx kit and do some testing in the real environment under real conditions.

The folded dipole antenna is designed to match with the CC2500 and since the CC85xx does not the same optimal load impedance, it will not work good without tuning. One drawback with the folded dipole is that is is not easy to tune it without making board spins. Furthermore, it is a rather large antenna so you would not save any space :-)

    hope it helps!

  • Hi Per,

It's a single audio (mono). Typically one slave, but sometimes two may happen. Considering raw PCM16 so far because of quality.

Sounds like the dipole antenna is a very bad idea. But what about that minimum track length from balun till antenna without the SMA connector that I've asked ? Any concerns?

We have requested the kit, it just didn't arrive yet. So till there we keep wondering... ;)

    Thanks,

    Gilson
