TPA3118 Application.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3118D2, PCM5152

Sir,

HP would like using TPA3118 for AIO application.

They have 4 speaker and RL=4 ohms, it'll parallel for each channel and shows at attach.

Is it no problem for TPA3118 application? (I mean min. load only 3.2ohms in spec.)

Regards, Ian.

  • Hi Ian,

It depends on the supply voltage level. The over current trip point is 7.5A. So with 24V supply the min load is 3.2 ohms. Is the customer using LC filter? They can use a lower supply voltage or PLIMIT function to limit the output peak voltage. Limiting the low freq at the input will also help to avoid tripping OCP.

    reg,

    Paul.

  • Hi Paul,

PVDD is +12V, they will using 2nd order LC low pass filter.

Do you think is OK using 4ohms parallel 4 ohms each channel?

    Regards, Ian.

  • It should be fine if they design the LC filter properly such that there is no excessive ringing/overshoot at the output and make sure that the inductor does not saturate at peak current. I would suggest that they include a stuff option RC snubber at the outputs (evm example). Also use PLIMIT to also limit the max output voltage and still get the max Po that is needed. Use good ground plane for best thermal performance.

we have sucessfully been driving the 4x 4R HP speakers with a single TPA3118D2 running on 12V supply voltage here in the LAB in Copenhagen.

This have been done with the SmartAMP speaker flow running on the AIC3254 driving the TPA3118D2, and we did not seen any issues with peak current or thermal performance on the EVM. So we would propose to use the PCM5152 DAC+DSP with the SmartAMP algorithmens + TPA3118D2 powerstage for the HP system.

please copy me on this design

    best regards
