CC8520 trouble shooting help

I've inherited a project using the CC5420 with a CC2590 and a PCB antenna and am having a few problems with it.

I have a development kit, and it works good.  I've even gotten out master to talk to the slave on the dev. kit.

The hardware has been developed like the kit so that the purepath wireless chips are on a daughter board and each gets programed as a master and a slave.

Here are my problems.

1) Our wireless daughter boards are not as reliable as the TI boards connected to the Kit.  When the Kit is running, it is nearly impossible to break the RF connection by interference.  Using our RF boards and hardware, it is easy to interfere with the connection, even when our master is used with the TI slave.

2) The original RF board layout was incorrect and had to be reworked in order to make it work.  I'm afraid that this is contributing to noise that is audible in the audio signal.  There layout has been corrected, and I wonder if there is a way to check it?

3) The TI development slave is very good at connecting to the TI master after our master has been used with it.  The reverse is not true.

It seems like I have to reprogram both our master and the TI slave in order to get them to communicate again.

Is there a way to solve this?

    1. Best guess is that there is something with the schematics, layout or antenna tuning (if you are using a PCB antenna). 
    2. Careful consideration with regards to power is necessary. The CC85xx+CC2590 is pulling power at ~400 Hz (every timeslot period) due to the RF consuming more power when active than when not. Good decoupling and care with regards to layout is needed to prevent this from being picked up by a ADC or influence a DAC/PWM output. Similar, poor grounding can also cause some issues. Have you had a chance to determine the frequency spectrum of the noise? This might reveal what is the root cause. 
    3. Not quite sure if I understand here. Are you saying the TI slave will not pair to the TI master if it has been paired with your master?

    3. The TI slave will always pair with the TI master.  The TI slave will pair with my master, but will not pair again if it had been paired with the TI master.

    What parameters in the programmer control pairing.  I would like our products to have the ability to pair, when the pairing button is exercised.

  • 2. From what I can see on my old scope here is periodic noise at 66Khz and 133Khz which are harmonics close to 400Khz.

    1. I can get someone to look at it yes. Will get in touch. 
    2. The power pull is 400 Hz and not kHz; 66 kHz and 133 kHz are out of the specter for 'audio'. If you have problems using your old scope for this you can use a free recording tool and record the audio/noise and run a frequency analysis.  I use Audacity for this purpose - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

    3. When the TI slave will not pair, what is the status LED indicating? What kind of pairing process are you using? Button on both ends? Once paired the Slave will store and remember the network id of the master (see user guide section 2.4.1)
