When zero data is detected on either of the channels, the zero flags can be used to trigger external mute circuitry or as status indicators.
Patrick, thanks I guess that would help with pop to make changes at the zero crossing.

Not really. It is more to mute the output (noise goes to 0, SNR is then infinity) or to shutdown the system to save power.
