Audio measurement

Which is the best test equipment or software for analyzing audio amplifiers and systems - other than Audio Precision (AP)?

AP is good but too expensive for small customers.

It should be able to provide details of THD, frequency response etc. for the amplifier under test.

  • Hi, SP,

Most of our customers are using APs, but I have seen a few use discrete analyzers that are probably a lot cheaper than the AP. You may even be able to find some kind of USB accessory to make these measurements.

Unfortunately, I never paid too much attention to the analyzers I've seen.

You could also use a spectrum analyzer if they have one of those.

  • Hi SP,

There are two other boxes that I am aware of, besides computer cards that may be available. Those boxes are:

    1. Stanford Research Systems:

    2. Rohde & Schwarz:

The SRS one is about $8.5k (depending upon selected options), and the UPV is on the same level of cost as the AP, but has some neat DSP capabilities that the AP doesn't have. However, I believe that AP and R&S have lower cost production models without all of the bells and whistles that might also meet your needs.

    Best Regards,

    JD

Perhaps you can go with your choice of high-quality audio interface and use Smaart as the analysis software?
