RF Dropouts

Hello,

 I have an audio design that uses the CC8531 and 2590 for transmitting audio to your cc8531/2590 headset PCB. I am getting RF dropouts as close as 3m. I have tried the test with the main board and RF daughter board that comes with the Purepath Wireless Dev Kit, one of our designs with the same Purepath RF daughter board, and our design with the Purepath RF design for the CC8531/2590 integrated onto the Main PCB. The environment is open LAB space with no partitions. My question is why are we getting dropouts so close to the transmitter? Do we need a better antenna that the integral antenna you have on the headset PCB? Do we need to further amplify the base transmitter?

        Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. The 1st of the three configurations we have been working with is the TI EVAL Kit. Not our boards so a review of our board seems premature.

       What I want to understand is when the base unit (PurePath Dev Kit) is set on a table and I proceed to walk away from the base at a SLOW pace, why am I getting dropouts as early as 3M? Remember, this is ALL TI equipment we're using at this point.

  • Aaah... sorry about that.

    This is strange that you drop off so close to the source. Do you have wifi or any other signals running in the 2.4GHz space? In the presence of a strong interferer there could be a possibility of drop off. If yes, try turning off all radios and doing the test again.

    one thing that comes in mind is if you forget to select range extender in the configurators radio panel and then use a board with the CC2590 the range will be very reduced as the CC2590 will act as a pure RF attenuator.

    If this is not the case, please post your configurator project files so that we can have a look.

    I have the following suggestion.

    Start by flashing the TI master with CC85XXDK - Preloaded Demo - Analog input Master and the TI slave with CC85XXDK-Headset (HS) - Preloaded Demo - Analog output slave.

    How is your range now?

    Then try to add the following functionality one by one (functionality in your project that I can see differ from the preloaded demo files):

    - 48 kHz sample rate on the master. Is this affecting your range?

    - Increase Maximum slave count to 4 on your master. Is this affecting your range?

    - Switch do Audio device: DSP on your master. Is this affecting your range?

       We loaded the boards with the configs you requested and still see dropouts at ~10ft/3M.

    Moving from 44KHz to 48KHz had no effect and Switching from 1 to 4 Slaves had no effect.

  • Hello Kristoffer - I believe I have the same problem as Mackie:

    I have two CC85XXDK-HEADSET development kits (four total PCB's). The first kit I've had for some time and was working wonderfully with stock firmware - never re-flashed. The sticker on the bottom of the boards in the kit states version 1.2.1.0 (in fact all my PCB's in both kits show that version). I never ran the Configuration tool until last week. I downloaded the latest version of the configuration tool. After simply installing the original stock demo with the newest firmware into the boards that once worked great - they now skip horribly (audio cuts in and out - possible RF dropouts).

    In fact, I can configure one master and the three other boards as slaves (only changing the master program to handle up to 4 slaves) and three slaves cut out every half second or less - same distance and location of transmitter to slaves (<3M). I attempted to get back to my original working headset kit (just one master and one slave) - programming the factory demo firmware un-modified with 1.4.1. It just works terrible now - to the point where it's useless.

    Bottom line is the original kit worked flawless (with what I assume was version 1.2.1.0 as labeled from TI) before the update with 1.4.1's stock demo load.

    Can you please email a link where I can download this older version firmware to try and get back on track and fix the audio cut out problems on my original kit? Again, before updating to the latest stock demo code 1.4.1 - my original demo was flawless - great audio, range and absoluetly no cut-outs in sound - constant stream.

    It sounds like Mackie and I may have the same issue - could it be firmware/hardware version combination related?

    Need to try older version - assuming if bottom label on boards states version 1.2.1.0, I'd like that version to re-flash all four boards. Ultimately, my goal is to have one stereo transmitter with up to four stereo slaves.

    Hopefully Mackie may be seeing the same issue and this helps... Mackie - what version does it state on the bottom of your headset kit's boards?

  • Hi Svojoe,

    I tested this right now, using the web release of the PPW Configurator 1.4.1.38034. It works completely fine. Are you sure you are flashing with the correct firmware image? Do this:

    - Go to the Start Page of the Configurator and double-click on the CC85XXDK-Headset (HS) - Preloaded Demo (See picture below).

    - Make no changes to anything, just go down to the Flash Programming panel and flash one PCB as master, and one PCB as slave.

    - Pair the devices and stream some audio.

    - You should have good range now. Please let me know how this works.

    I have downloaded the most recent copy of the PPWC (1.4.1.38034) and flashed one set of the units with the default demo. Audio seems to be great again - however, if I change the Master to handle up to 4 slaves, the audio drops out frequently again.

    To set up for 4 Slaves, I go into the CC85XXDK-HS Preloaded Demo, select ‘Analog Input Master (AIC3204)’, then ‘Radio’, then set 'Maximum slave count' to 4 and save as a new project and device name - then go and flash the units. Is there something else I would need to configure to account for wanting to pair up to 4 slaves? After programming the one master to handle up to four slaves, I paired the first slave, and already the audio cuts out badly. Am I missing a setting?

    Would it be possible to email a project configuration with device configurations for one stereo master and up to 4 stereo slaves that are pre-set for what I’m looking for - where you test the audio on your side and confirm the configuration works great with no cut-outs for up to 4 slaves?

    Again, I currently have two headset kits – I can setup one stereo master with 3 stereo slaves with what I currently have. I must be missing a tweak that would allow this to work...

  • Hi Svojoe,

    I have attached a project and device configurations.

    When including support for 4 slaves the robustness will be reduced because the master must make room in the timeslot for 4 slave packets instead of 1. Longer timeslot will lead to fewer retransmission attempts when packets are lost. You will therefor experience reduced robustness even though you only have one slave connected (because the timeslot now is longer).

    When connecting all the 4 slaves you will experience even further reduction in robustness because the slaves are not necessarily missing the same audio. For example (and this is just an example meant  for illustration) slave 1 can be missing audio slice 9 and 11 while slave 2 can be missing audio slice 3 and 6. (An audio slice is a group of audio samples.) The master will therefor fill the next master packet with slice 9 and 3 to please both slave 1 and 2, whereas it would have filled it with 9 and 11 if only slave 1 was connected.

    You say that when you include support for 4 slaves the audio drops out frequently. At what distance is this? And at what distance do you experience frequent drop outs when 4 slaves are connected?

  • Thanks Kristoffer - I just tried it out. I still have the same results when running the master at 4 units. I am between 1 to 2 meters from the master to slaves. I'd expect to cover a distance of no more than 7 meters - no walls in between.

    Since I still experience dropouts - what would be the next step toward improving robustness? Would it be to use an external antenna on the master? If so, do you have a recommended external antenna to try first?

    One more thing to note, it seems like the first slave I paired has less dropouts than the units paired after - in fact, it almost seems to get progressively worse with the third and final unit suffering from dropouts the most. Does this offer a clue or is this explained with the design?

  • Hi Svojoe,

    1 to 2 meters is way too short. I tested this in my office now: One master streaming to 3 moving headphones. The master had support for 4 headphones. All the headphones could walk away from the master and dropouts started to occur after 13-15 meters away from the master.

    So either there is something physically wrong with your boards, or you are testing in an environment with a lot of 2.4 GHz interferers, or you have very strong interferers close to your nodes. To find out whether or not this is caused by interferers I guess you have to test this somewhere else. A place where you know that wireless consumer electronics such as Wi-Fi or micro-wave ovens are not used.

  • Hello Kristoffer - I tested the units on the other side of my house at about 5meters apart. Same dropout issue - identical results. I decided to try something different and programmed the worst Slave receiver out of the bunch as the Master, and the remaining the Slaves. I had different results - now all but one stays solid and one Slave still drops out frequently (I verified it was not the Master used in the original scenario).

    Out of curiosity, what version is printed on the tag on the bottom of the boards you used in your testing? Have you seen this issue before with some of the dev kits where they dropped out frequently and when replaced with new boards the dropout stops? I'd be willing to send you these boards to test yourself - maybe I'm just plain doing something wrong or indeed I do have one or two marginal boards.

    Concerning the external antenna - have you had any success where an external antenna improves situations where dropout occurs in the 5m range? If so, do you have a part number recommendation to try?

  • Hi Svojoe,

    On my boards the sticker says 1.2.1.1, but this is only firmware, so when flashing with the latest configurator this becomes meaningless. The important number is the pcb rev number which is printed with silk screen at the bottom of the back side. If it says CC85XX Headset 1.2.1 or CC85XX Headset 1.3 you should be fine. It sounds like there is something wrong with at least one of your boards. If you send them all to me I can take a look and give you some new ones if I find something wrong.

  • Hello Kristoffer - all four of my boards are version 1.3. Again tonight I changed which unit was the master and it nearly made everything work perfect with minimal cut-outs. It's strange that changing which unit is the master affects the quality between all units. So this does then seem like I have one or two boards that may have something wrong. I'll send them to you for review. This gives me hope that the concept will work once we determine the potential hardware cause for the drop outs depending on which of my four PCB's are setup as the master.

  • I have the same problem as the guys above, I posted about it yesterday.    I have four slaves, that connect in pairs to two masters.  On one master everything works great, on the other master one slave drops audio all the time distance is about 2ft or less doesn't seem to matter.  All hardware is TI headset ref boards, I have about 10 of them in the lab.

    I just got another headset kit out and swapped out the misbehaving board and the problem went away.   Hopefully it's just a board issue and not an overall issue.   My boards are all marked Rev 1.3 SN 1343001634.   Not a big deal if my dev board has an issue but now I'm afraid that if I model my production boards on the reference schematics will I run into these same issues?

    2ft seems like a production issue, especially if replacing this boards solve the issue. 
    I would not be too worried and actually encourage you to follow the reference schematics as far as possible (with the only exception, I would have made the slaves antenna diversity boards if space allows and the slaves are to be moved around - this feature was not available when the headset boards where made).
