Problem with AIC3254 and PurePath

I am trying to run the examplecode ADC_I2C_VOL_DAC in PurePath.

The code seems to compile and download as expected, but I can not get any audio signal out of it from PurePath on any output.

I have connected a input signal to IN1 and I am listening on both LINE-OUT and Headphone output on the EWM board.

(When I use the software tool 'AIC3254 Control Software' all analog routing from the input to the output is working as expected including analog bypass around the ADC-DAC with help of the MAL/MAR routing)

  •  How do I configure the analog input/output paths in PurePath ?
  • Which frequency of the masterclock does PurePath expect ? (And how do you use PurePath code in a inbedded soultion with another frequency) ?

PS. I have read the User Guide and so on for PurePath, but some of that information seems to be for an older CODEC. DS.

  • Hi Mikael,

The "PGA Analog Bypass" preset does not mix the ADC or DAC outputs -- it only routes the Mixer Amplifiers to the Headphone and Line outputs. The ADC_I2C_VOL_DAC process flow feeds the analog inputs into the ADCs, the ADC miniDSP then hands its data to the DAC miniDSP, and the DAC outputs the data to the headphone amplifiers. At the same time, the I2S data from the PC is fed into the DAC miniDSP and is mixed 50/50. Playing an audio file with your favorite PC media player should output audio through the headphone outputs.

If you are having success programming the AIC3254 with the Control Software and you cannot hear any audio using PurePath Studio, then it is possible that the AIC3254EVM's firmware is not programmed correctly.

The attached file, CS_SCREENSHOT.JPG, shows the firmware version that is originally programmed when the boards were assembled and tested (AIC32x4 EVM). This firmware version will not work with PurePath Studio. The Quick Start Guide (which can be found in the same location that PurePath Studio is downloaded from) has a firmware programming procedure that must be followed in order to communicate with the EVM while using PPS. Section 1.3 (Programming the AIC3254 EVM to Support Pure Path Studio) explains this procedure.

At this moment, the routing paths can be configured using the AIC3254 CS. We will release a newer version of PurePath Studio that supports custom register settings for each process flow.

The USB-MODEVM (the motherboard included in the kit) provides an 11.2896 MHz MCLK and a 44.1 kHz WCLK.

  • Hi Mikael,

    Did this fix the problem?

  • We already had flashed the card with the firmwire that was shipped with build 10 of PurePath using the instructions in the PDF without any known errors during flashing, not forgetting to move the Jump W13.

The last file used during flash is called USBMODEVM105.bin.

Starting CS thereafter, CS reports version V0100.

So the problem is not solved, but on the other hand, we found the build 13 from the 19 of Mars and will try that out now.

    Best Regards

    Mikael

  • Mikael,

    Please try the following:

    1) Open the AIC3254 CS and open the "Typical Configuration > Audio Playback" panel. Click the load button and connect a headset to J9. Play a music file with any media player (USB-MODEVM must be selected as the PC's default sound card).

If this does not work, verify that the jumpers and switches are correctly set as described in sections 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 of http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau264/slau264.pdf. Note that the analog bypass mode previously described can work without an audio bus present, so it is important that SW2 on the USB-MODEVM is correctly configured, as shown below:

    2) If the above works correctly, then proceed with PurePath Studio. Make sure that the Stereo_Mixer is set-up properly (e.g. 0.5 / 0.5 mix). Once the code is downloaded, play a music file while monitoring through headphones (exact hardware setup as in step 1).

Let me know how this goes.

  • Yes, A1 and Ext. Masterclock is turned off. Also, the clock signal can be found on the TestPoint on the EWM-card.

The thing is (with this card nr. 2) That everything involving the DAC or ADC doesn't work in any program at all.

The first TI-card could for an example be used as a soundcard and so on, but that old firmware did not support PurePath on the same time.

After Windows halted during flashing the first TI card, it was replaced by the local TI reprehensive.

This "second TI-card" has been tested by 3 different persons on 4 different computers, and no one have been able to get any DAC or ADC activity, but all analogue routing works. PurePath does not work; the presets in CS does not work involving ADC & DAC. It does not work as a recording device or a playback device in Windows if you select it in the control panel. Digital loopback does not work either in CS.

Everything with the DAC and ADC seems to be dead on the card.

Is there a test to see if the card is broken? Or another test that can be done?

We have test equipment if you need to know the status of a TP.

TI Sweden, TI Germany and TI US, has so far not been able to resolve the problem.

We could try to just replace the chip with another on the EWM board, but I guess that the card should go back to TI for analysis!?

  • Mikael,

Based on your description, it seems that the there is indeed a problem related to the ADC and DAC functionality. I suggest you to contact your local TI representative to replace your EVM board and, if possible, have them send the damaged EVM to us.

If you still have the other board (card #1), there is an EEPROM programming procedure in the newest version of the AIC3254 CS, as shown below.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

  • The CODEC-card had some hardware trouble, but since it was replaced by TI, both PurePath and CS started to function as expected with the EWM board.

  • Hi,

I am using USB-miniEVM version 2.03. I also have issue when running with purepath. I tried to follow these in two steps. I can hear (via head phone J4) what having played via a media player (good at step 1).  After downloaded AIC3254_ADC_I2S_VOL_DAC (example) to EVM from purepath, I can not hear anything. The second step does not work. Actually I haven’t hear anything using purepath so far. The settings are same as the screen shut here (in step 2), including Stereo_Mixer settings.  Any suggestions what could be wrong?

  • Hi Vinson,

Are you using the AIC3254EVM-U (USB Stick form factor)? If so, see the attached zip file for PurePath usage.

  • Hi J,

Yes, I am using AIC3254EVM-U. After applied the attached cfg file, it works.

    Thanks for the help.
