TPA3123D2 supply current is about 60mA

Hi!

I use TPA3123D2 and i've made a couple of PCB with it. It works well but i noticed it's too warm even when there's no sound at all. Still it stays warm even in mute mode. I can see supply current about 60mA but datasheet says 23mA. The conditions are follows:

Supply voltage 24V

Single ended configuration

SD pin stays at +3.3V level

Mute pin stays at +3.3V level

All the PCB is made with TPA3123D2 evaluation board recommendation, layout and BOM.

Output filter is made with good SRR1208 22uH inductors and ceramics 1206 X7R 0.68uF.

What did I do wrong?

Welcome to e2e, and thanks for your interest in our products!!!

I suspect the issue is the fact that the 23 mA specified in the d/s indicates that it was measured with "No Load" which actually means no LC filter AND no speaker. Depending on your output filter design, the filter may be dissipating a lot of power. Take a look at this app note for a discussion on LC filter design.

Hi Don!

Thanks a lot for quick reply and for app note. I couldn't imagine one could use D-class amplifier without filter :) That's why i thought "no load" meant no speaker.

Ivan,

You're welcome! It is a little bit odd. But, different filters can dissipate different levels, so for this product, we decided to eliminate that variability.
