PCM1808 Absolute Maximum Rating

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1808

The PCM1808 lists the maximum rating for the analog input as -0.3V to (Vcc + 0.3V)  <6.5V and input current of +/-10mA. I am currently analyzing a circuit where the voltage drops below the -0.3V rating to -1.6V however the current is well below the 10mA rating at ~0.7mA, will the input be able to withstand this condition?

  • Hi, Jon,

Welcome to e2e, and thanks for your interest in our devices. I am not sure I can shed any more light on this than you probably already know...

Usually, the voltage range is to prevent forward biasing of any diodes that are part of the ESD protection. ESD protection circuits are meant to clamp super fast transients. They are usually not capable of handling long term current... I am not sure where that 10 mA comes from, I am not sure if it is the current handling capability of the ESD cell or not.

To be absolutely safe, I would recommend an external clamp to prevent the input from going beyond the voltage range in the data sheet.
