Mulgti-slave I2S & PCM17xx Audio DAC Vout

I have a question re using 24-bit DACs in a multi-slave I2S configuration.

In particular we are looking at TI PCM17xx 24-bit DACs ... ones like the PCM1780, PCM1748, PCM1753.

Q1) Can a multi-slave I2S circuit be implemented using PCM17xx DACs? If so what logic circuit would I need to build?

Q2) Are there any TI App Notes describing this type of multi-slave I2S configuration?

Q3) I have looked into the Wolfson WM8762 which requires no configuration register setup & thereby eliminates having to

use a configuration I2C or SPI bus. The problem w that device is that when the bit clock is disabled the DAC output goes to zero.

The circuit being contemplated by us would select among DACs by muxing the BCK line.

How does Vout on the PCM17xx DACs respond if BCK goes away, that is, is started - stopped - started ?

Thanks. 08 JLY 2013, 1:30pm

  • Hi, Michael,

I apologize, but I am unfamiliar with multi-slave I2S configuration. Can you explain what you're trying to do?

As for how the Vout behaves with loss of clock... I suspect this is not very nice.

If this is a key care-about, take a look at one of our newer DACs, say PCM5102A which has excellent loss of clock behavior.
