TAS5715 line out function

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5715, TAS5717, TAS5716, TAS5706B

I'm currently considering using the TAS5715 for a new design but I'm a bit confused as to what the data sheet states regarding line out.

It states

The TAS5715 provides headphone PWM out that can drive a headphone amplifier. This feature cannot be used
in lineout mode, because once the headphone is selected, the speaker is muted. See the headphone use model
diagrams on how to use the headphone feature and quite turn on and off.

It there a "lineout mode" register or is this saying it can not be used in a line out function like to a sub woofer output or line level where you would want the powered speakers to be playing at the same time as the line out

Also, I'm looking for an audio amp chip that uses I2S and can provide around 20watts per channel on 24V rail @8ohms(but can handle 4ohms) and provide a line/subwoofer output via PWM or analog.  The TAS5715 looks to be a fit unless the pwm out only works when the speakers are muted.  Any suggested amp chips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi,

The paragraph was referring lineout to the speaker output. You will only be able to use the headphone or the speakers at one given moment since they both share one digital channel. The TAS5717 can provide your 20W x 2 (BTL) for 24V / 8Ohm as well as 4Ohm (see from figure 13 and 23. fig23 shows it can satisfy for 18V, 24V would give you even better THD performance).

  • Thanks for the information Brian

So I'm looking at the TAS5716 now and I'm having trouble locating an EVM for this particular chipset.  Do you know where I might find this EVM?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

We dont have an EVM for that one. There is for the TAS5715 though, isnt that the one you wanted?

  • Thanks for the information Brian

I was planning on using the TAS5715 until I found that it can only do the PWM output when the main speakers are muted as in headphone mode.  In my application I need a lineout/subwoofer out.  I've only found the TAS5716 and 5706 have these PWM sub outputs.  I'm leaning towards the 5716 since it can do 6ohm min load.  Do you know are there any app notes, design guides, etc...for the 5716?

Also, the 5706 and 5716 look to be pin for pin compatible would populating a 5716 on a 5706 eval board be a possibility?

  • Hi Brian

Please let me know if you have any information on my earlier post

    Thanks

  • Hi, EMu27,

Yes, if you order a TAS5706B EVM, you can swap out the IC for the TAS5716.

FWIW, the power sections of these devices are identical. The only difference is a small tweak in the digital section to allow you to mix some portion of L into R and vice-versa to get a 3-D like (soundstage widening) effect.

So, unless you really just enjoy soldering PowerPAD devices, I'd just use the TAS5706B EVM. Here is a link to the EVM.
