TAS5706EVM without PC and volume control

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5706

Hi,
I´m interested in the evaluation module TAS5706EVM. I´m student of electronic engineering, I´m studying how it works because I´m making a replicate in order to interact with various electronic issues such as PCB design, purchase of materials, assembly of components, general operation, interface and testing in lab.

I´m in the process of understanding how it works, I´ve read the data sheet (TAS5706 ) and the user guide (TAS5706EVM) respectively but I´ve some questions.

The MC57xxPSIA has a USB port which connects to the PC with the evaluation module, I understand that the TAS5706 registers are accessed through I2C bus lines SDA and SCL, but I was wondering if you can use without being connected to the PC. I would like to use the amplifier without the need of a computer, is this posible?

and

Does the volume control performed only via software GUI? Can it be controlled from the device?

Can anyone please help me?

I apologize if my words are a little confusing, my English is not very good. is the first time I write in the forum

I hope your understanding.

Thanks.

  • Hi Juan,

The TAS5706 is a software controlled I2C-slave device with DSP options. The device I2C registers can be read & updated by a I2C master. (For example, register 0x07 controls volume level..default is mute, and to play music, this needs to be updated).

In the case of the EVM, the TAS1020B serves as the I2C master. The SW GUI sends I2C commands via USB, and the TAS1020 transmits these to the TAS5706.

IF you have another I2C master that can load an I2C script to the device SDA/SCL lines, a connection to the PC is not required.

FYI, the following three I2C commands are the minimum set of commands required to play audio..

    Register 0x1B  - Write x00 (Oscilator trim)

    Register 0x05 - Write x00 (Exit Shut-down)

Register 0x07 - Write x30 (Unmute & set volume = 0dB).....(this can be rather loud so a x40 or x50 value can be used for lower volume...)

  • Hi Juan!

To what Ravi said, I'd like to add that the PSIA basically plays two roles:

    1. Acting as a I2C host controlling the logics of the TAS5706 (e.g. config, volume, etc)
    2. Providing I2S digital audio for the TAS5706

You can high-jack the PSIA<->TAS5706 inter-connection header and break out the I2C lines to an external MCU such as a MSP430* while keeping the PSIA connected to the other wires. The PSIA has jumpers that lets you redirect IDC header wires of your choosing (for this we thank Texas).

Basically, you need to break out the SDA and SCL lines and connect those to your MSP430. The PSIA keeps providing power and I2S for the amp while you experiment in controlling the amp logics with your MSP430.

I'm not 100% sure but if I remember correctly, the PSIA still does S/PDIF and AD conversion (and produces a corresponding I2S signal) even if you leave USB unconnected.

The TAS57xx EVMs are quite pricey for students and hobbyists so I've been working on a PCB of my own but had to shelve that in favor of other projects.

If only Texas could provide Eagle files for the TAS5706 EVM....Ravi, can you give us that?

*) Do get a MSP430 Launchpad, they're great and very affordable!

  • Hi Ravi,

Thanks for your answer. It has been very helpful. You were very clear and now understand. As I said before, I´m making a replica of TAS5706EVM2. This comprises two boards, the TAS5706 and MC57xxPSIA.

My design is based on information from the TAS5706EVM2 user´s guide  and TAS5706 data sheet, but there are some things I need. It occurred to me that maybe you can help me get them.

    1) I need the boot file to program the EEPROM (24LC64).
    2) I need the list of materials MC57xxPSIA.

The most important is the boot file for the EEPROM, with respect to the materials list, I have a list that I built based on the schematics that are in the user´s guide, but I'd like more details or any important information.

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate any additional information you can provide. I'm in the middle of a project with this amp, and is well defined, I'm doing the schematics from PCB and then do the next week I order materials.

    Best regards.

  • Hi Hanns,

Your answer was very useful for me, thank you very much. For now I'll control the TAS5706 from the PC through the USB interface, but I will add a switch to choose a possible MCL from another source such as the MSP430 Launchpad that you recommended.

As I told Ravi, I am looking for additional information that may help us better design the replica of the amp. Any help is welcome. Thanks.

  • Hi Juan,

If you are trying to prototype a board, I would recommend using a more recent device. The TAS5706 is an excellent part, but there are several devices that have been released after the TAS5706.

IF digital audio processing is not required, the TAS5760xx is a good candidate. This is a digital input Class-D, which can be used in either Hardware OR Software control mode. That way you wont be stuck with SW issues!

If digital audio processing is required, consider TAS5721xx or TAS5729xx device.
