tpa3116d2 power up pop problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3116D2

We are using the tpa3116d2 and it works perfect when its powered up, though when you power up the circuit, there is a loud pop mixed in with a lot of screeching distortion, it lasts a couple seconds then it works perfect after that.

There does not seem to be any soft start capacitors to change , so does anyone have any clues as to what the problem could be, or any simple reset chips which can mute the amplifier for longer during power up ?

  • Hi, Chris,

If the inputs are properly matched and terminated, the start-up pop is very small.

I suspect that either you have a mismatch in impedance on the differential inputs, or the stage driving the TPA3116D2 is mis-behaving during start-up.

  • Hi thanks for reply.

The input capacitors were from the same reel, so they shouldn't be too far out in value, but I will measure them. Even so, I think it will have to have a external mute control to hold mute high for about 1 second. I think that will solve the problem. If I power up with mute high and then switch to gnd I get a very small click, but thats to be expected. Though if mute is at gnd on power up I get a pretty loud thud.

I have been looking at reset chips by TI, but they are for micro's so they do not hold a logic state, they pulse high or low, so I can't really use them, can you suggest anything which may work ?
