Variable Gain Amplifiers for Audio Applications

Hello,

I am currently working on a final project at school and am working on developing a hearing amplification device. As part of that device I am looking into utilizing an automatic gain control circuit and have been looking at various VGAs sold by companies such as TI.

After reviewing data sheets the THS7530 seems like a promising solution, does anyone have any experience using this chip in an automatic gain control circuit for an audio signal? If so would this chip suffice or are there other chips that meet my requirements better?

  • Hi, Ryan,

    You might also consider something like the PGA2500, but maybe this is too complex for your system.

    Note the THS7530 requires an external AGC block to actually adjust the gain.

    We also have some audio parts with built-in AGC - like TPA2016D2 for example.

  • Hi Don,

    I noticed that I would need an AGC detect block in the example circuit diagram. Would I be able to just use a peak detector for that block? I do however agree with you in that I think the PGA2500  would be a bit too complex for the system I have in mind.

    I also think that the TPA2016D2 would be a bit complex for my system. Do you possibly have any components similar to the THS7530 that utilize through-hole soldering methods? Surface-mount soldering might be difficult with regards to testing our circuitry.
