PCME24 Compression

From the CC85xx family guide, it says PCME24 is achieved through companding, but this forum post

http://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless_connectivity/f/382/t/130936.aspx

says it is achieved without compressing the signal. Is PCME24 uncompressed? If it is compressed, is it lossy or lossless?

Thanks,

Pedro

  • Hi Pedro,

It is indeed lossy, but not in the sense of say mp3. You could think of it as a floating point format with 15 bits of mantissa and 1 bit used for exponent. Except in this case I guess the exponent is encoded in multiple consecutive LSb within the packet. In any case, you get the dynamic range of 24 bit, but SNR of only 15 bit.
