PCM5102A Click/Pop between track changes

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5102A, PCM1754, PCM5142

I design USB DAC by use TAS1020B with PCM5102A . I have some problem it have Click/Pop between track changes (All os winxp,win7, win8, Ipad and Android)  And some time when I play music on youtube when song silence and loud it have Click/Pop same . I try change usb controller to xmos X1 But this problem still remain.

(This problem not have in other DAC IC such as PCM1754 PCM179x )

How Can I fix this problem?

  • Hello Napat,

Thank you for the post. I can take a look at this. Could you tell me a little bit more about your setup?

    1) What are you driving with the PCM5102A (i.e. where does the line out go?) Is there a headphone or speaker power stage after the dac?

    2) Are you doing any configurations to the device in between songs? (i.e. writting any scripts or changing settings?)

    3) Do you have a way of recording the sound and posting it? It is sometimes helpful to hear the issue.

    4) do you get the same results on our evm? http://www.ti.com/tool/pcm5102evm-u If so, this could suggest a software configuration problem.

This information will be very helpful for narrow down this pop issue,

    Thanks,

    Nate

  • Hello Napat,

I just got some extra information regarding this from the systems team. The pop and click you are hearing is an inherent function of the device when it goes into mute mode. To avoid this happening (and avoid the clicking) you can add a small amount of dither to keep the DAC from seeing all zeros. If this is not possible then an external mute circuit would have to be added anytime the I2S data was all zeros.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions,

    Nate

  • Hi Nate,

    It's a good learning post!

Recently I meet the pop problem of PCM5142 too. So you mentioned "The pop and click you are hearing is an inherent function of the device when it goes into mute mode.'

Form testing, it shows when zero data is detected, then PCM5142 goes to standby mode, and when device change from standy mode to normal mode, pop happens.

Could you explain more about the "inherent function" when it wakes up from stanby mode?

    Thanks!
