TLV320DAC3100 output protection

I am thinking about adding some TVS diodes to protect the SPKM and SPKP pins. The SPKM pins and the SPKP pins are tied together to power one speaker. This is a new design and I want to avoid a problem. Can I assume both outputs are above ground and less than 5 volts? SPKVDD is 5 volts. Are there suggested circuits for this?

  • Hello,

5V TVS diodes should work well for this application. The PWM output should be slightly below 5V due to 2x RDS on of the output fets.

As for a suggested circuit, just keep them very close to the device pins and make sure not to have any vias on the PCB between the TVS diode and the device pin. This will keep the turn on time fast by minimizing inductance.
