Power Output of TPA6211A1 as Load Drops Below 3ohm?

Hello,

How does the maximum power output of the TPA6211A1 change as the load drops below 3ohm? The data sheet lists a maximum power output of 3.1W at 3ohm, but it does not show data below 3ohm.

I'm trying to determine the maximum output power of the amplifier if a speaker shorted (i.e. the resistance drops to ~0.5ohm). I know that the amplifier has built-in shorting protection, but I want to make sure that my speaker wire won't melt due to high current.

Welcome to e2e, and thanks for your interest in our products.

Unfortunately, the TPA6211A1 probably isn't the best choice for your application.

I recommend that you look at the TAS5421 device which can handle this situation, AND give you feedback via I2C.

Thanks for the response and the information. Unfortunately, I already have the TPA6211A1 installed in my system. Do you know if the TPA6211A1 has any protections for a downstream short-circuit or limitations on the max output current?

Hi, Ian,

This device does have short-circuit protection, so if the outputs are accidentally shorted, the device will not be damaged.
