TLV320AIC3101 - High-power Capless Output Pin Configuration for Stereo Headphone (RL=16 ohms)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3101, TLV320AIC32

Hi!

I am planning to connect a Stereo Headphone (RL=16 ohms) to the high-power HP outputs on the TLV320AIC3101.

I looked at the TLV320AIC32 datasheet. In Figure 16, it shows the HPxCOM pins tied together (connected to the barrel of the audio jack).

Is this the proper high-power capless configuration I can use with the TLV320AIC3101 to output at least 100mW from both HPxOUT's?

Thank you kindly for your help in advance!

James

  • Hi James,

Yes, you can use this configuration with the TLV320AIC3101.

Additionally, you may see the TLV320AIC3101EVM Schematic if you need more information about your design. The TLV320AIC3101EVM has a switch (SW1) and a jumper (JMP12) that can be used in order to change between a capless and an ac-coupled configuration. You may see the next picture to better comprehension (the blue path shows the capless configuration).

I hope this helps you. If you still have questions, please let me know.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Luis,

I was not aware of this feature on the EVM, so this definitely helps!

I believe this will let me output at least 100mW, which meets my requirements. Just to be absolutely clear, can you confirm that this capless configuration allows maximum output power to be supplied to the headphone speakers (the datasheet mentioned "high-power" output drivers and I want to make sure I use them for my application)?

    Thank you!

    James
  • Hi James,

Yes, the capless configuration allows to have a maximum output power with less THD, as datasheet mentions. It allows to have the output signal with a programmable common-mode voltage. It will let you have your power requirements.

I'm glad to read that the schematic helped you. If you still have questions about the high-power capless output pin configuration for stereo headphone, please let me know.

    Best regards,
