Choosing the right codec/dac to drive a speaker using AM437x microprocessor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320DAC3120, TLV320AIC3120

Hey,

I’m working on a project that requires me to interface with an AM437X microprocessor. In particular I need to be able to provide greater than 1 Watt of mono audio power to an 8-ohm loudspeaker. After taking a look through the different TI offerings I’ve come across the TLV320 family of chips. Right now I’m trying to decide between the tlv320aic3120 and the tlv320dac3120. The 3120 seems to have some additional features that I may find a use for later on in the project. I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me if one chip would be preferable to the other for my particular application or if I should consider something else entirely.

Thanks,

Corey

  • Hi Corey,

These devices has similar functionality, the difference between them is that the DAC3120 contains the Digital to Analog part of the AIC3120. Both devices are capable of delivering 1.6 W Into 8 Ω. If the application only Digital-to-analog conversion, you shall prefer the DAC3120.
